The 17th to 18th centuries saw rapid colonisation and growth of new industries (tobacco, cotton) and by 1756 the British tried to levy heavy taxes on the colonists.

The resentment of taxation culminated in The Boston Tea Party where colonists threw cargoes from ships at protest of import duties.

The British reacted by martial law and billeted troops in Massachusetts, closing Boston harbour. The first Continental Congress was then formed to secure the rights of the colonists.

By 1775 the colonists had had enough of British injustices and raised an Army led by George Washington, the American Revolution had begun.

1776 the American colonies declared Independence supported by Spain and France and by 1783 the war was won and at The Treaty Of Paris Britain accepted defeat.

1787 the founding fathers created the new constitution for The 'United States Of America' and in 1789 the leader of the army George Washington was elected first President of The U.S.A.
